BSCN – UBC Geering Up

This summer I have been fortunate enough to be traveling to and working with multiple indigenous communities around BC in planning for and delivering a science-based week-long curriculum that I developed for grades K-7 as part of my position as an Outreach Instructor at Geering Up. After taking plant biology, conservation science, ecology, and silvics last year and thoroughly enjoying it, I decided to infuse some of the concepts that I learned into my curriculum and had activities that included: ethnobotany, taxonomy, basic plant identification, wildfire ecology, pocket microscopes, and Lycopodium powder explosions! The work environment here has been a joy for me to be a part of, the communities I have visited have all been so beautiful and welcoming; I am very thankful to have had such an adventure-packed and fun position for my first co-op work term.
