For my second co-op term, I have been working as a Forestry Technician with the City of Edmonton’s Urban Forestry department. I work under the contracts and policy division where I respond to citizen inquiries, conduct tree health and risk assessments, and investigate police reports involving tree damage. Special projects I have helped with include conducting a tree inventory for a new LRT project, managing the trees for a neighborhood renewal project, and assisting with an Arbor Day celebration where over 500 first graders were able to take home their very own spruce tree. Co-op is valuable because the skills I have picked up are things I would never have learned in the classroom such as root pruning techniques and enacting tree bylaws. I enjoy getting to work with such a fantastic team of people everyday and love learning how a major city’s urban forestry department is run. I look forward to continuing to improve my skills in the coming months and through my third co-op term.
