Heather McDermid (Natural Resources Conservation)

BSCN-Stellenbosch Univeristy, South Africa

For the year of 2019, I will be working with Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Currently, I am a research assistant running a literature review on forest operations. The aim of this project is to measure fuel use and carbon emissions from forest operations, and how to best optimise the process. In the coming months, I will have the opportunity to travel the country to record data on timber harvesting and transport in the field. This position is my third work term, and since I am staying on for the full year, it will be my fourth and fifth work term too. I am so grateful to UBC Forestry Co-op for helping me find this opportunity, and would highly recommend other students to take advantage of any international work term placement.
