This summer I worked for BC wildfire services and was stationed in Merritt BC. I was sent on two deployments to Slave Lake and High Level Alberta. During those tours I had the opportunity to learn and effectively practice BC work safe procedures such as Danger tree assessment and helicopter safety. I also gained experience with controlled burns on my first fire up in high level. There I learned about effective fuel management and strategies to combat large scale fires. In addition to fire line skills I’ve gained experience working on projects in Princeton and Merritt BC. There I prepped areas for controlled burns for ecosystem restoration and fire mitigation. In addition I was given on the job training for awareness around fast moving water. Beyond practical skills I’ve been afforded the opportunity to work with a group of awesome people who have been fighting fires for up to 20 years. Without coop I would not have been able to spend an awesome summer outdoors flying around in helicopters and fighting fires!
