I have spent my fourth and final Co-op term working with Earthwise Society, a Delta-based not-for-profit that contributes to community sustainability through environmental education and stewardship. As the Urban Farming Program Coordinator, my primary role is coordinating the launch of Don’t Mow, Grow!, an initiative with a catchy name that partners with local residents to farm on their lawns. When I’m not traveling around Delta chatting with residents in their backyards or meeting with our farmer about potential sites and plans, I have had the opportunity to engage in the many other activities that happen at Earthwise. Many mornings I’ll spend on our half-acre organic farm helping with planting, harvesting, and maintenance or delivering lessons on farming and sustainability for grade 1-7 students. This work term has given me the chance to apply my conservation background in the context of agriculture, experience the impacts and challenges of community-based work, and to see a project grow from the ground up.
