Job Description

The Department of Forest Resources Management in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Forest Measurements. The UBC Faculty of Forestry conducts national and international research and provides undergraduate and postgraduate education in forest management, forest sciences, conservation science and management, and wood science and processing. The successful candidate will teach within the undergraduate forestry program and will also be expected to develop courses at the graduate level, contribute to the Faculty’s course-based masters programs, and develop a strong research program that includes supervising graduate students.

The position will support scholarship in forest measurements, forest inventory, sampling, and modelling forest stand dynamics across all scales. It is expected that the successful candidate will do research relevant to some or all areas of forest measurements. The central forest measurements research areas include: researching new technologies for ground and aerial forest measurements, measuring and modelling tree and stand growth and yield, advancing forest sampling theories and applications, advancing the development of tree allometry models, and advancing methods to pool datasets across temporal and/or spatial scales and from multiple data sources.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in forest measurements and modelling and support undergraduate field camps. The candidate will further develop graduate-level courses in forest inventory and analytics with a focus on forest sampling and measurements, modelling of forest stand dynamics, growth and yield models, and the integration of complex data sets. The candidate will also provide service within the Department, to the University and the broader community.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ph.D. in the field of forest measurements, with strong potential for developing an outstanding teaching and research program in forest measurements research areas
  • Expertise in at least one of the central forest measurements research areas (see list above)
  • Demonstrated success in publishing scientific papers in forestry or other peer-reviewed science journals
  • Evidence in developing and maintaining working relationships with industry, indigenous communities, local communities, NGOs and/or government agencies

Preferred

  • Experience teaching forest measurements
  • Experience working with natural and managed boreal/temperate forests and experience working with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Suitable background to pursue membership with the Association of BC Forest Professionals as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF)
