A full-time Research Associate position is available within the Forest Products Biotechnology/Bioenergy (FPB/B) Research Group, Department of Wood Science.
The Research Associate will develop and conduct research on drop-in biofuels. The work will involve gathering and analyzing data, drafting reports/papers and covering the overall supply chain of drop-in biofuels including feedstocks, logistics, conversion technologies, refinery co-processing, the LCA of biofuels, biofuels policy, etc. There will be a primary focus on aspects related to decarbonizing long-distance transport, particularly marine, aviation rail and long-distance trucking.
The Research Associate (RA) will also help manage projects related to advanced/drop-in biofuels development, the policy environment required for the promotion of biofuels production and consumption as it related to BC, Canada and the rest of the world.
The RA will help coordinate the activities of BC-SMART including website management, editing and publishing regular newsletters and preparation of meeting agendas, minutes and presentations. Good organization skills and a demonstrated excellent work ethic will be required. The individual will be multi-tasking, working on a variety of projects and reports, such as updating technical reports on drop-in biofuels, assessing the rate of commercialization of biomass-to-biofuels developments and the various international policies that have been used to commercialize biofuels.
The RA will have major responsibility for the delivery of the BC-SMART program including special reports (e.g. possible biocrude supply chains for BC/Canada, potential of biomarine, TEA and LCA analysis of co-processing in BC, etc.) as well organizing webinars, consortium members specific reports, newsletters, etc. This will involve working with various contributors, thus good writing skills will be essential and an important requirement.
- PhD in Science or Engineering with at least 2-5 years postdoctoral research experience in the field of Biomass, Biofuels and Bioenergy
- A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of biomass and biofuels supply chains and the collaborations/ interactions that involve the entire spectrum of stakeholders from biomass producers to biofuels end users
- Strong technical background in both biomass/biofuels’ simulation, optimization modeling and analysis. Familiarity with various TEA and LCA models will be an asset
- Good writing skills and a proven track record of success in attracting funding to support research activities
- Strong project management and good interpersonal skills desired
- Demonstrated experience in working in a challenging research environment in a high-profile research organization, operating in a politically sensitive arena
Duration of Appointment
This appointment will be for one year with a likelihood of extension if good progress is made and external funding support is obtained.
