BSCN – Parks Canada, Vancouver, BC
For my fourth co-op term, I have had the unique and exciting opportunity this summer to work for Parks Canada’s Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) Outreach Team. One of my main responsibilities has been to educate the public on the new 2020 management measures for SRKW protection. However, our summer has been looking a little different than it normally would due to Covid-19. One of the ways that we’ve been adjusting this summer is creating virtual educational programs. As you can see in the photo, we were able to set up a ‘set’ in our office (complete with a green screen)! I’ve had tons of fun developing interactive programs for kids and families.
Some of my other responsibilities include interdepartmental communication with other government agencies working on SRKW protection, developing boater and fisher compliance outreach tools, creating social media campaigns, and designing unique ways to communicate science & monitoring efforts to the public.
Co-op has opened up so many opportunities for me, and I’ve had an incredible 16 months in all of my different positions. I can’t wait to see what next term has in store for me.
