Seminar Abstract
Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on the planet. Used since ancient times as a food, fuel and materials, bamboo is becoming increasingly important as a sustainable solution to a number of pressing global challenges, including poverty, climate change and timber shortage. This presentation will highlight some of the recent research by UBC Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship Bamboo Applications and Manufacturing (BAM) Group. We will discuss bamboo’s unique growth, carbon sequestration and material attributes, compared to wood. Emphasis will be given to the advances, challenges and future directions of engineered bamboo products for building applications. Examples of innovative bamboo-based products for bio-packaging and green infrastructure applications will also be presented.
Speaker
Dr. Chunping Dai is associate professor in Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship, UBC. He leads the Bamboo Applications and Manufacturing (BAM) Lab, focusing on the development of bamboo and wood composite materials for sustainable building and packaging applications.
Before joining UBC, Dr. Dai spent much his career as a principal scientist at FPInnovations – Canada’s national wood products research institute and adjunct professor in Department of Wood Science, UBC.
He is a fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science, known for his work in developing mathematical models for wood composites. Having authored close to 300 technical publications and supervised over 30 HQPs, he brings extensive research experience in wood and bamboo composite products manufacturing.
