Dr Stavros Avramidis Appointed Vice President of the International Academy of Wood Science

Congratulations Dr Stavros Avramidis, elected Vice President of the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS) earlier this year. An esteemed mentor and educator, Dr Avramidis has long been a member of UBC’s Faculty of Forestry. Starting as a Research Associate in 1986, Dr Avramidis currently holds the position of Head of the Department of Wood Science, as well as Professor of Wood Physics and Drying. Dr Avramidis teaches at the Undergraduate, Master, and PhD level, covering a spectrum of topics including wood physics and drying, sawmilling, wood-water relationships, and advanced mathematics for wood products processing.

A leader in his field, Dr Avramidis’ research has advanced wood sciences through the study of wood-water relationships, water sorption and diffusion, processes for non-destructive timber evaluation, and various wood drying methods. On top of his role as professor, Dr Avramidis has authored over 250 publications, held the role of reviewer for 30+ scientific journals and publishers, and has been twice elected Senator of UBC.

Established in 1963, IAWS was created to promote and advance wood research, development, and innovation. With his expansive knowledge and passion for wood sciences, Dr Avramidis will be an exceptional fit for the role. We extend our sincere congratulations.
