Hamelin Forest Pathology Lab, UBC
This work term I have been working within the Hamelin Forest Pathology Lab at UBC. This placement has offered me diverse work experience from molecular lab work to hands-on field work. I have had the opportunity to expand my skill set through completing genetic analyses, propagating fungi, and organizing research data. The genetic work I completed during my placement included extracting fungal DNA, running PCR analyses, and preparing products for sequencing. After sequencing, I analyzed the phylogeny of the samples. I also spent a week on Vancouver Island surveying the presence of root rot in stands. Participating in the UBC Forestry Co-op Program has allowed me to develop these fundamental skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. My forestry co-op placements continue to expand my job experience prior to graduation, preparing me for the workplace post-graduation.
