Sunshine Coast Conservation Association, BC

For my first co-op term this summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to work for the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association as a Research and Outreach Coordinator. I have been heavily involved in doing research and compiling a brief report to save a proposed cut block under the Forest Stewardship Plan, which required on-site assessments, community engagement, and to further learn about BC Timber Sales. I have also been tasked with setting up outreach booths in local community events, working alongside volunteers, collaborating with local associations to organize conservation-themed educational workshops for children, and so much more! I have no forestry-related job experience, which has led me to apply for the co-op program and this job has definitely allowed me to experience a fulfilling role. I have learned and developed new skills – all of which may not have been possible if not for this co-op opportunity. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who is interested in challenging themselves or anyone trying to figure out what they would like to do in the future and hopefully, co-op could also lead them to discover new pursuits and passions, as it did for me.
