Sunflower Picker at Sunrise Florals in Surrey, BC

UBC Forestry Co-op Student Gregory Totaro holds a sunflower leaf.

For my third co-op term, I worked as a sunflower picker with Sunrise Floral in Surrey, BC. Each day I harvested, cut, and bundled sunflowers and other ornamental plants to be used in various flower arrangements and sold across the lower mainland. I gained firsthand agricultural experience and learned how to manage irrigation, netting, and risers. Through this experience, I learned about the important role local farms play in supply chains, as well as details of organic waste management, which will be helpful for future sustainability-related positions.
