I spent this summer, my first co-op work term, as an intern for Icelandic Forest Research. As a research assistant, I have had the opportunity to engage in various projects and learn from many different scientists. These projects included measuring a progeny trial of poplar trees, travelling for the Icelandic Forest Inventory, and assessing birch for a study on insect damage. Over the course of the work term, I have not only learned about the specifics of each project, but also about the research process, forestry in Iceland, and working internationally. Iceland’s distinct environment and culture have made for a really unique learning experience, and the Co-op program definitely encouraged me to seek out this opportunity. This work term has broadened my perspective in unexpected ways while teaching me valuable skills for the future.
