Johanna Garsson (Natural Resources Conservation)

Forest Technician at Lil’wat Forestry Ventures Ltd in Vancouver, BC, Canada

For my fourth co-op placement, I have been working as an intern with Lil’wat Forestry Ventures Ltd., based out of the unceded territories of the Lil̓wat7úl (Lil’wat) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations. This placement has allowed for me to participate in so many various aspects of the forestry industry, such as conducting regeneration surveys and acting as a member of a Type 3 contract firefighting crew. Working within the community has given myself a unique perspective towards what values to uphold in forest management, something that is difficult to connect to in a purely academic setting. I am so grateful for all the support and traditional knowledge that was shared with myself and the other UBC co-op students from our team, as well as the opportunity to be part of a company that is rapidly expanding its licenses and potential.
