This summer, I have been working with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources on timber sale layout, compliance, and silviculture. For timber sale layout, I have tagged and GPS’d boundaries, stream buffers, patches of “leave trees”, and tracked this data in GIS. I have accompanied a Forester to monitor active logging and ensure environmental regulations and safety standards are being met. I have additionally monitored regenerating stands, helping decide which stands need to be thinned. I have been able to see every step of the process of growing trees for timber, and I believe this job has given me a well rounded perspective on how forestry works on the ground to which I can apply scientific knowledge I learn in class.
