Forestry Innovation Investment

Natalie Chan

For my second and third co-op term, I worked at Forestry Innovation Investment, a British Columbia Crown corporation which promotes the usage of B.C. forest products, as well as identified and creates new opportunities for their adoption. Throughout my eight month work term, I took part in projects to provide concrete evidence to showcase wood as a viable building material and to better understand current B.C. wood usage and acceptance demographics. I managed and updated ThinkWood’s online research library, which is the largest resource globally of information on modern wood construction. The library provides fact-based answers to builders, engineers and architects across North America to ease doubts surrounding building with wood, such as seismic and fire concerns. In another major project, data on individuals and firms who interact with wood usage programing was analyzed to recognize and summarize the scope of B.C.’s wood adoption and to identify “Wood Champions”; individuals who actively use and/or vocally promote wood. This work term at Forestry Innovation Investment has been an invaluable experience to attain insight into the exciting opportunities for B.C. forest products and the various challenges to wood adoption and innovation. My existing passion for the wood products industry was nurtured and continues to grow.
