New ‘EDI in Research’ online course now available – June 20, 2024

Available through UBC Workplace Learning. This new online course is specifically developed for faculty, staff and students involved in research, to support the learning and implementation of appropriate equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) practices within the UBC research ecosystem. Development of this course was a collaboration between units in the Vice-President, Research and Innovation portfolio and the Equity and Inclusion Office.

The course includes:

  • a comprehensive summary of EDI concepts and practices that can be applied to research and the research environment;
  • a variety of topics in the areas of research design; research methods; research team composition; and research team culture;
  • support to identify and name obstacles and barriers experienced by historically, persistently, and systemically marginalized (HPSM) groups;
  • opportunities to reflect on biases, power and privileges that can impact research design and team culture; and
  • preparatory work for faculty and staff to integrate local EDI practices to ensure research environments, programs, and team members are contributing to a welcoming and inclusive research culture and environment.

CFI  IF & JELF  presentation – March 27, 2024

Equipment needs are not unique to researchers in the natural sciences. Social scientists “increasingly use new technologies to leverage large amounts of data to make new discoveries that will fundamentally change how research is conducted.” This may include staff time required to run these highly specialized systems.

This awareness is reflected in The Canadian Foundation for Innovation’s 2025 ‘Innovation Fund’ cycle (internal UBC deadlines in 2024 for most streams). It also applies to the JELF fund.

For the annual JELF competition, attraction candidates are those within 2 years of their recruitment date. If you missed that date, you can request an exemption from your Dean.
