Forest Pathology Research Assistant at UBC Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship in Vancouver, BC This summer I have been working in the Forest Pathology Lab at UBC. In this role, my main responsibility is to help a master’s student collect data for his thesis on Hemlock Dwarf Mistletoe where he is measuring the spread of this parasitic plant from mature forests into regenerating cutblocks. At the beginning of the summer, I used GIS to help identify potential study sites. And, when I had a bit of extra time, helped out with the lab’s annual Swiss Needle Cast counts. Currently, I […]

Laboratory Research Assistant at Canfor in Burnaby, BC I am continuing my work term as a Laboratory Research Assistant at Canfor Pulp Innovation for my third co-op work term. This May, I got the opportunity to go to the Northwood Pulp Mill in Prince George with several other staff members to conduct a fibreline audit. During this audit, we followed certain sets of chip samples, tracked when they would reach certain digesters and machines, and collected pulp samples at calculated times based on the operating speed of the machines. We brought those collected pulp samples to the pulp mill’s laboratory and […]

Laboratory Research Assistant at Canfor in Burnaby, BC For my second co-op work term, I got to work as a Laboratory Research Assistant at Canfor Pulp Innovation in Burnaby, BC. I was introduced to various procedures and experiments involved in pulp refining, some of which consist of making circular handsheets from refined pulp of different energy levels, testing handsheet properties in a controlled temperature and humidity environment, and checking for specific properties of refined pulp through additional experiments. As I got to learn more of these procedures and experiments, I was able to have a greater understanding of how Canfor Pulp […]

Intern at Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun, India For my 3rd co-op semester, I worked at the Wildlife Institute of India and developed a project in which my primary focus was around human-wildlife conflicts from a landscape perspective. I had travelled across the country to the state of Tamil Nadu to collect data in the field and had been there for three months. In the field I worked alongside a master’s student, as well as two researchers from the tiger reserve in the area. Every day we planned to go into the field at the necessary sites and collect data, rain, […]
