A new proposal has emerged in response to the November 2021 floods that swept Sumas Prairie in the Fraser Valley, causing mass evacuations and millions in damages.
In the Spotlight: Dr. Alex Moore
Dr. Alex Moore is an Assistant Professor at UBC, jointly appointed to the faculties of Forestry and Science. Their research focuses on how predator-prey interactions impact coastal wetland ecosystems and explores culture’s role in ecosystem restoration and conservation. Through their work, Dr. Moore seeks to directly engage with communities historically marginalized in STEM fields and encourage people to reconnect with their environment.
From Firefighting to Forestry
After working for some time as a firefighter, Debrah Zemanek’s career took an unexpected turn when she decided to pursue her dream through the UBC Master of Sustainable Forest Management program. Debrah now works at B.A Blackwell & Associates, where she helps lead their fuels management group.
