Quality Control Co-op Student – West Fraser

During my eight-month co-op at West Fraser’s Williams Lake Timber Division, I worked as a Quality Control Co-op Student, supporting daily QC tasks while leading several improvement projects. I analyzed production data to identify bottlenecks, optimized lumber flow, conducted LRF regression studies, and helped troubleshoot quality issues in both the sawmill and planer.

Timber Engineering Project Worker – Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship, University of British Columbia

During my co-op term at the Timber Engineering and Applied Mechanics (TEAM) Lab, I have been working closely with graduate researchers to support experimental testing on mass timber products, assist with sample preparation, and manage data collection for structural performance studies. Through this experience, I have strengthened my technical skills in laboratory procedures, quality control, and data analysis, while also gaining a deeper understanding of how material behavior, testing protocols, and experimental variability influence real-world engineering design.

Project Assistant – UBC Department of Wood Science

Over the summer, I worked as a Project Assistant in the Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship’s Wood Science lab at UBC. My main role has been to support the professors with various projects. Currently, I’m building a bat house for the bats living in Stanley Park – I’ve already finished a prototype and had a meeting with the project team, where they kindly shared some suggestions for improvements.

Research Assistant – Sustainable Built Environment Lab

For this co-op term, I’ve been working at the Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship’s Sustainable Built Environment Lab at UBC, where I’m developing a scaled-down mock-up of a light-frame timber building system. It feels a lot like building a piece of furniture – it’s fun, hands-on, and surprisingly complex.
