Growing up around Whitehorse and the Yukon territory, Garry Merkel never anticipated the trajectory of his life. Today, the member of the Tahltan Nation and Registered Professional Forester is a lead voice behind the Government of BC’s newly adopted old-growth forest strategy and a recent recipient of a UBC honorary doctorate degree.

Improving Forest Management with Mathematical Modelling
A team led by the UBC Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship has upgraded the free version of a mathematical modelling tool that could ultimately improve forest management through improved decisions. With these changes, the updated tool is now an open-source resource, independent of all commercial software.
