Human Dimensions of the Environment

The Environmental Social Sciences (ESS) cover various subjects like anthropology, economics, human geography, political science, and sociology. They help us understand how people value and connect with nature. ESS looks at individual choices and broader structures like institutions and governance related to the environment. ESS research gives us insights into the complexity of environmental problems, guiding us to create solutions that consider social aspects and specific contexts.

Examples of our research

  • Forests and forest-dependent communities in transition
  • Human dimensions (human behavioral, institutional, & policy elements) of conservation and resource management
  • Problems at the intersection of technology, environment and development (e.g. energy access, use of bioenergy)
