Field Research Assistant; Organization for Tropical Studies; South Africa I have been working on a variety of research projects as the Field Research Assistant in South Africa this fall, including vegetation sampling, baobab tree surveys, and camera trap maintenance. I have learned many technological skills using equipment throughout this position, specifically deploying camera traps and taking vegetation measurements. In tandem with my technological knowledge, I have also honed many transferable skills which will aid me in future positions, such as leadership, and organization. Being a Patrick Duffy International Work Award winner has allowed me to pursue this position in South Africa […]

Biological Science Technician; U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) In my work with the US Geological Survey, I have been working on an experiment exploring seed dormancy cycling in desert plants. This study aims to explore intra-specific variation of this trait within the Mojave desert, and the potential impacts of climate change on seed dormancy cycling. Dormancy is critical to seeds surviving extreme summer temperatures and long periods of drought, and to ensuring that plants germinate at times when conditions are most favourable to survival. This trait, while critical to the survival of entire desert ecosystems, has previously been vastly understudied. I am […]

Engagement and Impact Assistant Co-op; UBC Centre for Community Engaged Learning Working for the UBC Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) I have had the opportunity to develop programming for UBC students and community partners on various food, environmental, and housing justice topics. Here I helped facilitate partnerships between Metro Vancouver community organizations and created opportunities for students to venture beyond UBC and take on tangible projects in their communities. I learned how to facilitate large events and programming which brought together diverse groups of people in a collaborative manner and how to not only create a space for people to […]

NSO Intern Position at British Columbia Conservation Foundation; Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program. I will be completing my third work term at the Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program (NSOBP), which is a project under the British Columbia Conservation Foundation. I have begun learning about raptor glove training procedures such as training cues and falconry equipment. The goal is to bring our ambassador owl to outreach events on my own to engage and educate the public about northern spotted owls. This October I was eager to assist with veterinary exams crucial to checking the health of these raptors and I was able […]

GIS Business Analyst Co-op at Korotu Technology Inc. I have been working as a GIS Business Analyst to help shape forest management recommendations for landowners, organizations and the government. This includes estimating biomass information on > 900 forest hectares (equivalent to ~ 1200 football fields) and importing data from multiple spatially aware remote sensing data sources (satellites, drones, camera traps) in GIS! I feel particularly satisfied after completing each project knowing how much I have contributed to increase forest protection areas in Canada. I am happy that co-op has provided me the opportunity to help protect and grow nature-based solutions!

Intern at UBC Centre for SPDA – Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental in Lima, Peru Working for the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law (SPDA) I have had the opportunity to assist in community-based conservation projects across 3 communities in the Amazonas region of Northern Peru. I have helped set up various camera traps across the dense forests of the region and processed the resulting wildlife data. The aptly named “Valley of the Waterfalls” is increasingly threatened by unsustainable slash-and-burn practices implemented to expand on short-term profitable crops such as coffee. To combat this, I helped the SPDA team with stakeholder engagement projects […]

Forest Inventory Data Analyst at BC Public Service in Victoria, BC This work term, I continued my position with the Ministry of Forests in the Forest Analysis and Inventory Branch from last term. My main task this term was to produce a regression model analysis report used to compare and evaluate the performance of two tree height estimation models, as well as present the findings to our branch with my supervisor. I also created an R-based app used for streamlining the process of reviewing and analysing spatial data for the inventory update team. Through my work, I gained skills in writing and […]

Environmental Outreach Ambassador at City of Penticton in Penticton, BC In my first work term, I worked as an Environmental Outreach Ambassador for the City of Penticton. Most of my job is promoting and monitoring the recycling program. Sometimes, I’m also working with the water conservation program and climate action of the City to make Penticton more sustainable. My favorite part of the job is interacting with people in the Farmers Market every Saturday. The market is a traditional event in Penticton, and it always attracts many people to visit. I work in a booth of our program to promote recycling policies […]
