This UBC Professor is Spinning the Stuff of Electric Dreams
Dr. Yasmine Abdin and her team at UBC have developed a groundbreaking process that transforms bitumen into carbon fibers, bringing us closer to lightweight electric cars. This innovative, low-cost method enhances battery performance, extends driving range, and improves passenger safety.
Hybrid Steel-CLT Composite Connection Design Enhances Capacity and Constructability in Timber Buildings
With the rapid growth of the mass timber construction industry, the challenges of making the building process more efficient through constructability, sustainability, and compliance with performance-based design regulations, are as prevalent as ever. A new experimental study conducted at UBC by Samuel Shulman and Cristiano Loss examines the behavior and performance of innovative hybrid shear […]
UBC Forestry’s HEAL Network Receives Grant Renewal to Continue Innovative Research
UBC’s Faculty of Forestry is thrilled to announce that the Climate Change Health Effects, Adaptation and ResiLience (HEAL) network has had its grant renewed for another year. Co-led by Dr. Lorien Nesbitt, Department of Forest Resources Management and Dr. Chris Carlsten, Division of Respiratory Medicine/Department of Medicine, the interdisciplinary group is one of 40 UBC research excellence clusters that received funding under the university’s Research Excellence Clusters Initiative.
Establishing a More Meaningful Approach to Field Research in Global Communities
Western researchers who conduct studies overseas are likely familiar with the terms “parachute science” or “colonial science”. Both are defined as scientific work that does not appropriately acknowledge the importance of local expertise. PhD candidate Alida O’Connor wants to ensure her international fieldwork incorporates a more meaningful approach with equitable collaborations integrated into every step in the process.
Environmentally friendly ‘biofoam’ could address plastic pollution crisis
A new biodegradable packing foam developed at UBC not only potentially addresses the world’s plastic pollution crisis but also serves as an equal and true partnership example of working with First Nations.
