Cristiano Loss and UBC Team Receive $1M NSERC Alliance Missions Grant

UBC Forestry’s Cristiano Loss and a team of fellow researchers were recently awarded a $1M NSERC Alliance Missions grant. Their project, funded over two years, will help lead the development of advanced technologies for the creation of high-performance structures and surrounding community infrastructure that can respond to external stimuli and develop a resilient built environment.

Two pathogens linked to salmon health and survival in B.C.

B.C. Wild salmon populations have declined notably over the last three decades. New UBC research, led by UBC Forestry’s Arthur Bass, presents methods to improve the protection of wild salmon. The study uses the Strategic Salmon Health Initiative’s data to assess pathogens in thousands of Chinook and Coho salmon sampled over a decade along the B.C. coast.

Rising to the challenges in Hydrology

Piotr Kuraś has seen water resource studies increasingly focus on climate change adaptation over the years. The UBC Forestry grad, who started as a research scientist, is now a consultant and principal with Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC), where he provides clients with current information on various water resource disciplines.

From Firefighting to Forestry

After working for some time as a firefighter, Debrah Zemanek’s career took an unexpected turn when she decided to pursue her dream through the UBC Master of Sustainable Forest Management program. Debrah now works at B.A Blackwell & Associates, where she helps lead their fuels management group.
