During my time working with KFS I have been able to learn more in depth about the integrative management tactics and priorities that go into managing a community forests and the differences between that and private land management.
This summer I have been herding sheep for Ken Price Silviculture. As an alternative to mechanical brushing or herbacide we are using sheep to clear away the competing vegetation. Although it is seldom used, it is an economical and environmentally conscious practice.
My second co-op work term was at Ken Price Silviculture, as a shepherd. My primary responsibility of my work position is to ensure the safety and welfare of the flock which includes grazing the sheep and herding them to areas of good forage, as well as keeping a watchful eye out for any threats from predators.
Lucky for me, I got the chance to hop on a helicopter at the very beginning of my work term (on the first day too). My first experience riding on a helicopter was out of this world. I had been assigned varying types of work and in different locations too.
For my second work term I was hired at Interfor in Campbell River as an Assistant Logging Engineer. Primarily, we worked in the Call Inlet area preparing a second growth stand for harvest.
Applications are invited for two tenure-track positions in the Department of Forest Resources Management, Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia Vancouver campus.
