This summer I received the opportunity to work with Lil’wat Nation in Mt. Currie, BC. For the past 3 months I helped manage their forests in a holistic manner. This entailed tree planting, different types of surveys (reagan, free grow, coarse woody debris, indicator species surveys), survey compilations, demarcation of and within blocks using plot lines, as well as fuel management.

This summer I have been working on FortisBC’s carbon management and environment team. My main responsibility has been researching how they could use nature-based carbon offsets to reduce their overall emissions, but I also assist in writing grant applications to the B.C. government, and surveying gas plants for leaks. I have gained extensive knowledge into FortisBC’s role in the clean-energy transition and how the global carbon offset market operates.

I have been working on doing Individual Tree Inventory (ITI) most of the time during my work term. In this job, I have to measure every tree’s DBH, height, age and record any defects on the tree. I have learned a lot during my time there, including defining defects on trees and using vertex to measure tree height as referenced in the photo.
