Tree Planter at J.D. Irving Ltd. in Edmundston, NB For my first co-op term, I worked as a Tree Planter in northern New Brunswick. Having grown up in Vancouver, being tossed into the woods forty-five minutes away from the nearest town was a bit of a shock—but a little venture into my new backyard had me falling in love. The air was fresh and sweet, lichen blanketed the trees, and the last of May’s snow was imprinted with moose and deer tracks. And not to mention the photos I got! The beginning of planting was especially rough. The sun was scorching […]

Marine Education Ambassador at Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre in Gibsons, BC For my first Co-op work term, I have been working at an aquarium called the Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Center on the Sunshine Coast. Every day’s tasks were vastly different from each other. Over this work term, I have gained a lot of practical knowledge about the identification of marine species, how to properly care for and feed aquatic […]

Summer Camp Leader at Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association in Vancouver, BC From the beginning of June, I have been working as a Summer Camp Leader with the Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association for my first Co-op work term. Undergraduate Research Assistant at UBC (Forest and Conservation Science) in Vancouver, BC This summer, I have had the opportunity to work as a research assistant for the Forest Insect Disturbance Ecology Lab at UBC. I have been assisting the grad students with their research primarily on the alder bark beetle, its fungal symbiont, and its effects on red alder stands in the Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island. The field work I have been doing involves insect trap collections, external R-surveys, and finding newly attacked trees. I also have been gaining lab experience by doing DNA extractions and sample prep for […]

Summer Forest Technician with Lil’wat Forestry Ventures in BC For my first Co-op placement, I have had the pleasure of working as a summer forest technician with Lil’wat Forestry Ventures in Mt. Currie, BC. In this position I have been exposed to numerous different aspects of the forestry industry from post-harvest to regeneration and management, while having the added benefit of seeing how an indigenous run forestry company blends traditional forestry practices with indigenous priorities. The first month of my placement focused mainly on tree planting, where we stocked harvested blocks with seedlings according to the spacing and species present before […]
