With the growing demand for specialized knowledge and skills in the forestry industry, the Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship is thrilled to announce the expansion of its micro-certificate offerings. Building on the success of our existing programs, UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship has launched nine new micro-certificate programs, catering to the diverse needs of professionals seeking to excel in this dynamic field.

In the Urban Forestry issue, explore the relatively new role of the urban forester, learn from leading urban forestry researchers who are examining the human and wildlife health implications of urban forests, and find out about the important role citizens can play in maintaining green spaces. This issue also features several, highly experienced BC urban foresters who have dipped their toes in everything from landscape design to pest infestation management, wildfire preparedness and tree planting initiatives.

Hybrid Steel-CLT Composite Connection Design Enhances Capacity and Constructability in Timber Buildings
With the rapid growth of the mass timber construction industry, the challenges of making the building process more efficient through constructability, sustainability, and compliance with performance-based design regulations, are as prevalent as ever. A new experimental study conducted at UBC by Samuel Shulman and Cristiano Loss examines the behavior and performance of innovative hybrid shear connectors for hybrid cross-laminated timber (CLT)-based structural composites and assemblies. Their study proposes a new connection design method for hybrid steel-CLT structures that utilizes shear connectors fabricated by encasing steel rods in CLT panels using an epoxy-based grout. Bianca Eskelson Receives the Alexander Von Humboldt Research Fellowship
Dr. Bianca Eskelson has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She is recognized as a Humboldt fellow for her research project on climate-sensitive tree mortality models and the economic implications of altered mortality probabilities in mixed-species stands in central Europe and interior British Columbia, Canada.
