The Rise of Urban Forestry
As the world becomes increasingly urbanized, the need for green spaces and sustainable urban ecosystems becomes crucial. Explore how urban forestry professionals work to protect and maintain urban parks, natural areas, and tree canopies in the face of climate change and land-use challenges.
Hybrid Steel-CLT Composite Connection Design Enhances Capacity and Constructability in Timber Buildings
With the rapid growth of the mass timber construction industry, the challenges of making the building process more efficient through constructability, sustainability, and compliance with performance-based design regulations, are as prevalent as ever. A new experimental study conducted at UBC by Samuel Shulman and Cristiano Loss examines the behavior and performance of innovative hybrid shear connectors for hybrid cross-laminated timber (CLT)-based structural composites and assemblies. Their study proposes a new connection design method for hybrid steel-CLT structures that utilizes shear connectors fabricated by encasing steel rods in CLT panels using an epoxy-based grout. The researchers performed a series of experiments on […]
Bianca Eskelson Receives the Alexander Von Humboldt Research Fellowship
Dr. Bianca Eskelson has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She is recognized as a Humboldt fellow for her research project on climate-sensitive tree mortality models and the economic implications of altered mortality probabilities in mixed-species stands in central Europe and interior British Columbia, Canada.

Our internet addiction is destroying our ability to combat the climate crisis: An Earth Day Q&A with Hamish van der Ven
The internet is firmly embedded in human life, but we need to consider its rising physical and non-physical costs to the environment and our ability to address climate change. That’s according to Dr. Hamish van der Ven, assistant professor in the UBC Department of Wood Science, whose lab investigates how technology impacts the great sustainability challenges of our time. In this Earth Day Q&A, Dr. van der Ven discusses how the internet can harm our hope, attention and ability to recognize the truth, and how disconnecting from the internet could help. Q: How does using my cellphone contribute to climate change? […]
