I am an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersection of urban forestry, environmental justice, and climate resilience. My research aims to co-create more liveable, equitable, and sustainable urban environments, grounded in an understanding of cities as complex social-ecological systems. Throughout my career, I have worked closely with communities and organisations across Canada and internationally—first as a community-based environmental planner and facilitator, and now as a researcher committed to participatory and justice-oriented approaches.
My work focuses on urban forestry and environmental justice, with particular attention to recognitional justice, green gentrification, and the role of urban nature in human health and well-being. I investigate how civic stewardship and plural knowledge systems and values can inform more inclusive and effective urban greening. I also explore how power and inequality shape access to and relationships with urban nature.
A growing focus of my research program is on climate justice and the potential—and limits—of so-called nature-based solutions to support just urban adaptation. Through my lab, we are advancing participatory methodologies that connect lived experiences to technical and policy solutions, with the goal of avoiding the unintended consequences of top-down, technocratic approaches to urban sustainability and climate planning.
My research is recognised internationally and contributes to theoretical, methodological, and practical advancements in equitable urban greening. I lead the Urban Natures Lab at the University of British Columbia, where we work in close partnership with community organisations, municipal governments, and interdisciplinary scholars to foster just and transformative urban futures.

My long-term research interest is in analyzing natural and environmental resource policy with an emphasis on forestry and in developing new policy options that can help enhance the long run sustainability of Canadian forests and the communities and businesses that rely upon them. The forest sector itself is undergoing a structural transformation as the industry has to adapt to changing markets and new opportunities and risks; at the same time, there is an increasing emphasis being placed on the non-market values of those forests, spurred by changing public expectations on how those forests should be managed. Climate change makes the challenges even more complex.
I currently am investigating what role Ecosystem Services could provide as an alternative business model for indigenous groups managing forest lands in BC. I continue to work on assessing the impacts of climate change on how we manage our forests and exploring adaptation options.

Increasing forest resilience to climatic extremes using silvicultural interventions is my main research objective. This involves overlapping methodologies in silviculture, growth and yield, tree-ring science and climate change adaptation. Evaluating silvicultural treatments on timber quality and value, as well as reducing impacts from forest disturbance agents under climate change, are also key components.

Mike is an environmental psychologist whose research is focused on scenic beauty and aesthetics of the natural world, environmental visualization and geographic information systems, and sustainability planning. He is also quite interested in outdoor recreation, visual perception, human emotional processing, and decision making. Prior to coming to UBC, Mike was a children’s counselor working with the Tohono O’odham nation in southern Arizona. He has been involved in a number of interdisciplinary research projects focused on: 1) public involvement in sustainable ecosystem planning efforts, 2) the projection of future forest conditions according to economic, ecological and social indicators of sustainability, 3) the management of spatial and temporal data at a scale required for landscape planning, and 4) distributed artificial intelligence modeling of human/landscape interactions with specific attention to issues of conflict in outdoor recreation and tourism.

Dr. Melissa McHale is an urban ecologist whose internationally recognized work bridges cutting-edge theory and applied science to inform decision-making in cities. Her research advances understanding of how urban ecosystems function and how nature-based solutions can be mobilized to address climate change, urban heat, and equity challenges in rapidly urbanizing regions.
She received a BS in Conservation Ecology from Rutgers University and a PhD in Ecology from Colorado State University, and completed postdoctoral training with the Central Arizona–Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research (CAP-LTER) program at Arizona State University. Prior to joining the University of British Columbia, she held faculty positions at North Carolina State University and Colorado State University. She also served as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Wits City Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
Dr. McHale is currently a faculty member at the University of British Columbia, where she leads the Urban Ecology and Sustainability Lab. Her research program focuses on developing science for climate-resilient, nature-rich cities, with particular emphasis on urban heat, ecosystem service provision, and the structure–function–service–equity relationships that shape urban landscapes. Her work is deeply collaborative, co-produced with cities, practitioners, and community partners, and is designed to translate directly into planning, policy, and implementation.
Her contributions have been recognized through multiple awards and competitive grants, including a National Science Foundation Urban Long-Term Research Area (ULTRA-Ex) award and the Distinguished Ecologist Alumni Award from Colorado State University. She is also a recipient of the Peter Wall Fellowship at UBC, supporting her leadership in building a long-term, transdisciplinary research platform for climate resilience in British Columbia.
Dr. McHale has a strong track record of leadership at the science–practice interface. She founded the Urban Sustainability Research Network in Fort Collins, Colorado, fostering collaborations among academics and practitioners to develop impactful, solutions-oriented research. She continues to serve as a scientific advisor to cities, government agencies, and non-profit organizations, contributing expertise on urban forestry, climate adaptation, and ecosystem services.
Her international research program includes long-standing work in South Africa and across the Global South, where she studies sustainable urbanization and resilient social–ecological systems. This work builds partnerships among scientists, conservation organizations, and local communities, and has supported NASA-funded research on urbanization hotspots and ecosystem service dynamics in South Africa, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. Through this program, she creates opportunities for students to engage with diverse knowledge systems and to work alongside historically marginalized communities facing complex environmental and social challenges.
