Establishing a More Meaningful Approach to Field Research in Global Communities

Western researchers who conduct studies overseas are likely familiar with the terms “parachute science” or “colonial science”. Both are defined as scientific work that does not appropriately acknowledge the importance of local expertise. PhD candidate Alida O’Connor wants to ensure her international fieldwork incorporates a more meaningful approach with equitable collaborations integrated into every step in the process.

Future Forests

In this age of the Anthropocene, the pressures of human activity are compelling dramatic shifts in climate and ecosystems that parallel some of antiquity’s most Earth-altering natural disasters. To secure a future for our forests, we will need to adopt new approaches to forest management that incorporate diverse perspectives and adapt to the ever-changing climate.

UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship’s Asia Forest Research Centre Wins Open Innovation Award

UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship is proud to announce the faculty’s Asia Forest Research Centre (AFRC) is the recipient of the 2022 Open Innovation Award from Open Education Global. The AFRC offers 14 graduate-level certificate online courses developed as Open Education Resources (OERs) that have been widely utilized by over 15,000 students globally.

Seeing Climate Challenges in Europe Firsthand Inspires Urban Forestry Students

Master of International Forestry Field School Returns to Quesnel

In partnership with the City of Quesnel and their Forestry Initiatives Program, UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship hosted its third Master of International Forestry Field School. This year, 16 students and their professors spent two days in Quesnel speaking to land managers, small businesses, government reps from the local First Nations, the municipality, the provincial government, and industry experts.

UBC Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship Hosting Undergraduate Indonesian Students This Fall

UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship will host 10 undergraduate students from Indonesia this fall, thanks to the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program. The program gives top Indonesian students the opportunity to take university classes not typically offered in their own country, and further develop leadership skills in a multicultural setting.

UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship’s International Bamboo Conference Attracts Hundreds from Around the World

The virtual, first-of-its-kind Engineered Bamboo for Sustainable Construction Conference UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship co-hosted earlier this spring with World Bamboo Organization and Zhejiang Agriculture and Forestry University attracted over 800 registrants representing 84 countries from around the world.
