In the Spotlight: Dr. Minghao Li
UBC Forestry welcomes Dr. Minghao Li, Associate Professor in Sustainable Timber-build Environment, to the Department of Wood Science. With an extensive research background in high-performance engineered wood products and connection systems, multi-story mass timber and timber-steel hybrid structures, Dr. Li joins the newly formed Wood Building Science and Technology Cluster to continue to advance innovative solutions to complex structural issues.
Faculty of Forestry Supports UBC Team to Design Sitka Spruce Aircraft Model for International Competition
UBC Forestry recently joined forces with the UBC Faculty of Applied Science and their UBC AeroDesign (UBCAD) team to provide space for and help design an aircraft model that featured balsa and Sitka spruce wood in one of its fixed wings.
From Engineer to ‘Wood Nerd’
“Sometimes people bug me about being a wood nerd; but, I like that I can now identify why, for example, one type of wood will give an even coat of finish or why certain types of wood last longer in wet conditions,” says UBC Forestry’s graduate from the 2022 Wood Products Processing program, Melissa Vincent.
Cristiano Loss and UBC Team Receive $1M NSERC Alliance Missions Grant
UBC Forestry’s Cristiano Loss and a team of fellow researchers were recently awarded a $1M NSERC Alliance Missions grant. Their project, funded over two years, will help lead the development of advanced technologies for the creation of high-performance structures and surrounding community infrastructure that can respond to external stimuli and develop a resilient built environment.
Emily Cranston Awarded LeSueur Memorial Award
UBC Forestry congratulates Dr. Emily Cranston for receiving the 2022 LeSueur Memorial Award from the Society of Chemical Industry. Awarded to exceptional individuals for their work in the development of technical excellence, LeSueur Memorial Award recipients are honoured for their innovation and ingenuity within the Canadian chemical industry.
